Richard’s ZDT3.5

Many people will know that I’ve been talking about building a set of speakers for my front room for quite some time now. Today, Tuesday 9th December, I actually started. The design is heavily based on John Krutke’s ZDT3.5, although I’ve had to change to some things, as many of the parts for his design aren’t available in the UK.

This is where I started this morning:

And this is where I ended up this afternoon:

Not exactly astounding progress for one day, but at least its a start. I’d like to have all the cutting done by tomorrow so that on Thursday I can start on the bass port circles.

Day Two - Wednesday 10th December

Staggering progress today. By 10am I had set of cabinet cuts fitting nicely:

By lunchtime both were done:

Right now I’m having some lunch and trying to calculate the changes I need to make to the bass ports so that they can be made with parts I can source.

Day Three - Thursday 11th December

No progress made explicitly today. Although I’ve been to the DIY monger and procured two 300mm clamps, 16 1/4 inch spade connectors, an 18mm plunge bit for the router, and 3 metres (I wasn’t allowed less) of 40mm waste pipe.

To my delight when I got home I discovered that the internal diameter of the waste pipe is 38mm which is exactly what’s required. This means I don’t have to fiddle about with sums anymore!

Day Four - Friday 12th December

This morning I’ve built a prototype bass port, which is really rather splendid. I’m not too happy about the bright yellow and black lane marking tape I used to get a good seal, but I’m sure I can find an alternative. Here are some pictures:

At the end of day 4 I’ve got all four bass ports cut and mounted:

Day Five - Monday 15th December

Not much progress today, I’ve discovered that my router jig won’t cut holes small enough for the baffle. The smallest it can cut is around 200mm. I need to do some thinking…

Day Six - Monday 16th December

I’ve hit a milestone today. The frame of the first cabinet is glued together. Here it is outside with the clamps on:

And here it is with the glue all dried in the lounge:

First Cabinet in the Lounge!

They’ll be a brief interlude whilst christmas happens, as I’m going away. As soon as I return I’ll carry on posting and carry on building!

Day Seven - Saturday 21st February

Well that interlude wasn’t as brief as I was expecting it to be! Today is a day of baffle cutting. Here’s the first outline for the woofers:

This is the 2nd:

And here are both baffles completed:

Hey looking good so far! Keep up the posts, i’m building these also and your pictures are helping a lot! Have you finished the crossovers yet?

Not yet. The parts are on order though. I need to think about exactly how to construct them. I’m tempted to etch a PCB, which will be the neatest solution, but also might be over kill!

I built mine already, I mounted them on half inch mdf on drilled holes to the back and did all the soldering there.
